Rotators / Wannabees - New Shipment Tomorrow - Saturday September 1st

With the beach fisheries as fantastic as they have been the past couple of weeks we have been going through beach gear just about as fast as we can get it unpacked.  The hot lure of choice this season has been the larger size Rotators in Chartreuse with Chartreuse Mylar, Chartreuse with Chartreuse Mylar on one side and Lime Green on the other; Pearl White with Pearl Mylar is another good choice.  We once again ran out of these lure today and will have another shipment being deliverd tomorrow.  If you need us to hold some for you give us a call and we will do just that. (425) 743-9505

PS:  The Island fisheries are as good as we have seen in many years.

Coho Salmon - Marine Area 9 & 10

We have seen nothing but rave reports coming from all the salmon fishermen coming in the past couple of days.  Most everyone has no problem in catching their limit of nice 4 -7 pound coho with a few going up to 13.  You do not have to travel far to find fish, the shoreline from the Browns Bay area all the way to West Point has been the best producing area.  The AM fishing has been best with the time frame from dawn 5:45  to 9:00 has been most productive, though folks are definitely catching fish throughout the day.  Most have been fishing from the surface to around 50 feet, with the 20 - 35 foot zone producing well early.  Latter in the day most of the fish drop down into the 70 -90 foot zone though there are still some good bites that are occurring shallow.   Hot Spot Flashers or Jim Break Away Flashers in White Glow or Green Glow with a 140, 142, 161 or 12 colored Gold Star Squid or Ace Hi Fly fished 32 inches behind has been doing well.  Green/Chartreuse Grand Slam Bucktails or Olympic Coho flies in the candlefish or white colors have also been doing well.  For those without downriggers a small plug cut herring fished behind 6 - 8 ounces of lead or a diver / dodger / coho fly or squid combination has been a good bet.

If you have any questions you can stop by and we'll  be happy to help you out - have a little patience as we have been extremely busy with the way fishing has been.

Coho Fishing - Edmonds Area

The past couple of days have seen nothing but good coho fishing in the Edmonds area.  We have had countless numbers of guys in the past two days that have mentioned how good the coho fishing has been for them.  Most everyone has had no problems in getting their limits  and if they didn't it was a matter that they were trying to get larger fish to take home and were picky about the size.  Most of the fish have been in the 4 - 7 pound range with a few that a pushing up to 13.  Though fish that are really 8 - 13 pounds are very few and far between.  Fish have been fairly shallow in the first few hours with anglers finding them from the surface down to fifty feet.  Many anglers have been successful dragging a plug cut herring with 4 - 8 ounces of lead.  Fishing Deep 6 divers with a dodger squid/coho fly combination has been very successful for those not having downriggers.  If you have a desire to get in some coho fishing this season, the next two weeks should provide the best opportunity.  If you have any questions on what to use or how to rig gear up just stop by and we'll be glad to give you a hand.

New Shipment - Rotators/Wannabees

We just received another shipment of the ever popular Rotators yesterday afternoon.  We have them in the Chartreuse/w Chartreuse Mylar, Chartreuse/w Lime Green Mylar and Chartreuse with Chartreuse Mylar on one side and Lime Green on the other side.  These have been without a doubt the most popular colors this season.  We have a fair number at the present time, but I don't expect them to last more than another day or so before we are out again.  We have a lot more on order and will be getting them on a fairly regular basis.  Give us a call and we can put them away for you.  (425) 743-9505.

Lake Chelan Area Report - Anton Jones - Darrell & Dad's Family Guide Service

What’s hot is trolling for Lake Trout on Lake Chelan near Mill Bay early in the morning and late in the evening.  Also hot, is trolling for Lake Trout in the early evening uplake of Wapato Point.

The early morning and late evening bite below Wapato Point on Lake Chelan continues to produce some nice fish.  Worden Lures T4 Flatfish in either Luminous Chartreuse or Purple Glow fished 100’ back with a one pound ball taking it to the bottom has produced the majority of our bigger fish.  Mack Lures Cha Cha Squidders baited with a piece of Northern Pikeminnow off the downriggers has produced fish too.  A speed of 1.4 mph has worked best.

Fishing just above Wapato Point later in the afternoon and focusing on those Cha Cha’s has gotten good numbers of eating sized Lakers to bite.  Look for depths of 165’ to 195’ to locate those fish.

This is a great time to begin gearing up in anticipation of another fall on Rufus Woods.  We usually prepare for three different methods to fish for those delicious Triploid Rainbows that have made Rufus one the more popular fisheries in the Northwest.  First, we like to troll.  Usually that means Action Disks by Wiggle Fin in front of a Wooly Bugger style fly.  Second, we stock up on jigs in the 1/16th and 1/32nd ounce sizes to jig vertically on those fish.  Third and last, we stock up on Patuzke’s Firebait to anchor up and catch fish when they just aren’t biting artificials.

Your fishing tip of the week is to rig your gear ahead of time.  We usually have 3 set ups pre-rigged to sub in or to replace losses.  We also have a spare rod and reel pre-rigged so that if we snag and lose a bunch of line, we don’t have “down time” re-rigging.  You don’t want to lose valuable time on the water tying knots and re-rigging gear.  Do it in the comfort of your home.

The kid’s tip of the week is to use “work arounds” to avoid unnecessary conflict with school age children.  An example is the kid continually asking what time it is.  Being a smart aleck, I normally say:  “Time for you to buy a watch”.  But then I usually follow-up and tell them to flip open my cell phone and look at the time any time they want.  That helps the adults from getting annoyed and gets the kid what they want.

The safety tip of the week is to check that grease on trailer axle bearings.  This the time of the year where water intrusion can create problems for you after a summer of highway trailering and lots of in and out of the water time.  An ounce of prevention…

Continued Good Coho Fishing

The coho fishing continues to be quite good here in Marine Area 9.  We have had numerous folks in today that had good fishing both from the beaches on the west side of Whidbey Island as well as the boat fishermen fishing the Possession Bar as well as those fishing the Edmonds shoreline from the Spainish House area north of the Edmond's Ferry slip all the was down to West Point below the Ship Canal.  So far this has been an outstanding early coho season and by the indicators we are seeing we should be seeing some good coho fishing for some time to come.

New Shipment on Rotators

For those of you that have been awaiting a "New" shipment of Rotators (Wannabee's) we just recieved a batch of the larger models in Chartruse/w Chartruse Mylar, Chartruse/w Lime Green Mylar and Pink/w pink mylar.  We had just a few hundred come in this afternoon and a good number have already gone out the door.  If you need some give us a call and we can put some away for you.  We will have more coming this next week.

Edmond's Coho Derby - September 8, 2012

Don't forget to mark your calendar for the Edmond's Coho Derby coming up on Saturday September 8th.  With the good coho fishing that we have been seeing this week the ticket sales have been quite brisk!  Tickets again this year are $30.00 per entry and everyone on the boat needs to have one.  As in the past Anthony's Restaurants has thrown in a $15.00 gift certificate good toward the purchase of two dinners Monday - Thursday during October.

Beach Fishing - Whidbey Island

We have had nothing but good reports coming from the western beaches of Whidbey Island this week.  Everyone has been doing well and are all ranting about the number of fish that they are seeing coming through the area.  Yesterday we were just deluged with folks gearing up for the beach fisheries.  With the word getting out I am sure that there will be good numbers of folks trying their luck at Bush, Lagoon and Fort Casey.  For those of you fishing Casey, make sure you have a "Discovery" pass - as it is a State Park!  We have everything you need for the beaches.  Buzz Bombs, Rotators, Krocodiles, Floats etc.  We'll be happy to get you geared up for this fishery and send you out with the right information.

Great Coho Fishing - Edmonds

The reports that we have had this morning have been off the wall in the Edmonds area.  Everyone that we have spoken with has had outstanding fishing this morning with easy limits the rule.  The fishing was in fact so good that most everyone was able to be very selective about the fish they kept and in fact let the smaller 5-6 pound fish go to catch larger ones.  With the reports that we have been getting from the Straits and Neah Bay we should see some very good fishing for some time.  Stop by and we'll be glad to give you a run down on some of the most productive gear.  With fishing this good you do not want to wait to get out!

Coho Are Here!

Though we have been seeing an occasional ocean coho here and there for the past couple of weeks and an odd individual managing to catch 2 or 3 on a rare day it looks as if they are finally here in good numbers.  One of our regulars fishing off Edmonds this AM had a very quick limit of ocean coho in the 6 -8 pound range and said that the other 6 -7 boats in the area also were also playing fish around him.  He spoke briefly to Toby Black (WDFW Test Boat) and he also had caught three.  We should see good coho numbers from now into the first part of October, but remember that these earlier returning fish are by far better biting fish and are still actively feeding.  Those returning latter have the river on their minds and are less interested at biting your offering.  Bob had his fish in the 55 -75 depth range this AM.

Edmonds Pier - King Fishing

Today marked the best single morning of salmon fishing off the Edmond's pier.  We heard that there was 17 kings hooked this morning with amazing 10 landed.  Overall, the pier has not been exactly a ball of fire this season, though this past week has shown the best numbers we have seen.  With both Areas 9 and 10 being closed to king salmon by emergency orders, with yesterday being the last day.  The pier remains open and is the last place that one can legally retain a king in Area 9.  It is a one fish limit off the pier with both hatchery and wild Chinook being able to be retained.  We will see mature kings being caught off the pier into mid September.  Various minnow lures such as Point Wilson Darts, Gibbs Minnows and Crippled Herring have been the lures of choice with those in the 2 - 2 1/2 ounce range and Pearl White, Pearl Green, Green Glow, Green Silver or Black Silver colors being the most commonly used.

Coho Beach Fishing - Area 9

Over this past weekend we have finally heard of some fairly good coho fishing from the beaches here in Area 9.  We have had a few of the Island boys in this morning that were in getting gear and they mentioned that the western beaches of the island all turned out some fair numbers of coho over the weekend.  They mentioned that most of the fish were in the 5 to 6 pound range with an occasional one to eight.  Most were fishing Wanabees (Rotators) or Buzz Bombs.

We also had one of the guys in this AM that had been fishing the beach at Point No Point on Saturday and he also said they had a good number of fish that morning also.

This is just the start of the coho fishing and we should see good fishing from now until the first part of October.

We have good numbers of Wanabees (Rotators) and Buzz Bombs in stock and can fill you in on the beach fisheries in the area.

Chelan Reports - Anton Jones - Darrell & Dad's Family Guide Service

What’s hot is trolling for Lake Trout on Lake Chelan near Mill Bay early in the morning and late in the evening. Heating up is the Chinook Salmon bite in the Brewster Pool. We have received reports that the Kokanee are schooling off the Painted Rocks near Stehekin in preparation for their run up the river.

The early morning and late evening bite below Wapato Point on Lake Chelan has produced some nice double digit fish. Hands down, the Worden Lures T4 Flatfish fished 100’ back with a one pound ball taking it to the bottom has produced the majority of our big fish. Mack Lures Cha Cha Squidders baited with a piece of Northern Pikeminnow off the downriggers has produced fish too. A speed of 1.4 mph has worked best. Moving just above Wapato Point later in the morning and focusing on those Cha Cha’s has gotten good numbers of eating sized Lakers to bite.

On the Brewster Pool the bite has transitioned from Sockeye to Kings. This is a short window where the Chinook are more eager to bite and still of good eating quality. These Kings will bite Super Baits and Plug Cut Super Baits as well as plug cut herring. Mountain Dew Plug Cut Super baits 42” behind a big rotating flasher is one tried and true presentation. Fill the Super Bait with oil based tuna and dip it in your favorite sauce. We like Pautzke’s Krill Juice. Make sure your herring is fresh and cured nicely to stay on the hooks.

We have received reports of some nice Kokanee fishing near Stehekin on Lake Chelan. Use Pautzke’s Fire Corn on a pink Mack’s Lures Cha Cha Squidder behind a small Mack’s Lures Double D Dodger.

Your fishing tips of the week are oldies but a goodies. Meticulously check your line for nicks and your knots for strength. I run my leaders through my lips as my fingers lose their sensitivity at the end of the summer. Test those knots hard before getting them wet. Another piece of the puzzle is the screw eye connection of the hooks to the lures. Tug on all that to check and make sure the connections are solid. It’s a shame to lose a big fish due to a preventable problem.

The kid’s tip of the week is to use lots of sloppy praise to keep them interested and involved. Don’t be afraid to be a bit silly!

The safety tip of the week is to keep that sharp lookout for woody debris on Lake Chelan. As it waterlogs, that wood settles and gets harder to see. Don’t be afraid to slow down coming through those debris fields.

Chelan Report - Chinook & Kokanee

Ron Moen a good friend and customer for a great number of years sent me this Chelan report from yesterday.  He is taking his annual Chelan vacation.  As you can see there is some very good fishing still to be had on the big lake.

This was the first day at Stehekin. We caught 15 Kokanee, and one King. The
first Kokanee weighed 1pound,13ounces.I didn`t weigh the King, but, I
imagine it weighed somewhere around 6 pounds. I had to quit because I didn`t
have any more room in my cooler for fish. We just got to Stehekin, and, my
refrigerator and ice chest were full of food and beer for the entire trip. I
have never seen Kokanee this big in Chelan.

Salmon Fishing - Area 9 & 10

Things have been quite busy and have been behind on getting things posted with all of the fishing opportunities going on at the present time.  I would have to say that overall we have seen better Chinook fishing in Area 9 & 10 than what the WDFW had predicted preseason. We have had some very good reports coming out of the Port Townsend (Mid Channel Bank) area for the past few days.  Both Mid Channel and the Craven's Rock areas have been putting out some fairly good consistent fishing.  Yesterday, we had one of the regulars in that had just got off the water from fishing Craven's Rock on the last couple of hours of the incoming time and was rewarded for his effort by landing a couple in the mid twenties and a couple in the upper teens, all hatchery fish!  He was fishing right on the bottom in 90 - 120 feet of water fishing Hot Spot Flashers and needlefish hoochie combinations.  He mentioned that all the fish were stuffed with 2 inch candlefish.  If you fish this area definitely stick with candlefish offerings such as the needlefish hoochies, coho killers or Grand Slam Bucktails in the needlfish patterns.  The peal white or green color patterns have been the ticket in the Grand Slams.  Try the Coho Killers in the White Lightning or Cookies N Cream patterns.

The Possession Bar area was a little slow over the weekend but we did have a few decent reports yesterday.  Here it has been a little more of a herring show as far as the bait so larger offerings such as your standard 35 sized squids or 3.5 or 4 Kingfisher Spoons have been more the norm.

The Kingston / Pilot Point are has been turning out some fish but has not been a real barn burner by any means.

The Edmonds / Richmond Beach area has been fairly good for those than have been consistently putting in there time.  One nice thing about this area it is close to home and those with a budget or a minimum time to fish find it to be just fine.

We should continue to see some fair king fishing for the next couple of weeks then taper off toward the end of the month when the king season closes.

Chelan Area Fishing Reports - Anton Jones - Darrell & Dad's Family Guide Service

What’s hot is the Sockeye fishing in the Brewster Pool. What continues to produce big fish is trolling for Lake Trout on Lake Chelan near Mill Bay early in the morning and late in the evening. For those that are looking for a bit of dock action to keep the kids interested we have been getting nice numbers of Northern Pikeminnows in Mill Bay.

The Salmon Season in the Brewster Pool is in full swing. The early morning bite can be particularly hot. Again, the suggested formula for Sockeye would be a big Mack’s Lures Double D Dodger. Then add a 12” leader of 30 or 40 pound test mono back to a Mack’s Mini Cha Cha Squidder in Pink & White. Space the hooks about 2 inches apart. Then bait the hooks with one inch chunks of shrimp cured in Pautzke’s Fire Cure. Fish this ensemble about 15 down to start.

Lake Trout continue to bite trolled flatfish in the lower basin. Big fish continue to show up with enough regularity to keep things exciting. Use Worden Lures T4 or U20 Flatfish in either Luminous Chartreuse or Purple Glow near the bottom in depths of 120’ to 160’ for best success in getting these big fish to bite. We fish them close to the bottom off 100 feet behind one pound balls, while working squid rigs off the downriggers with a 40 foot setback. This is working best between 5AM and 10AM as well as from 6 PM until dusk. Later in the morning and the middle of the day we hit piles of smaller fish down in the trench or over by the monument. Troll Mack’s Lures Cha Cha Squidders or Silver Horde’s Ace Hi Flies in depths of 185 to 245 feet deep in these areas.

We have been catching some nice Northern Pikeminnows from the docks in at Mill Bay. For best effect we use Lake Trout livers on slip sinker rigs while we are prepping for and breaking down after Lake Trout trips.

Your fishing tip of the week is an oldie but a goodie. Sharpen those hooks. They should be sticky sharp.

The kid’s tip of the week is to have them wear something that they can get wet in this mid-summer heat. Evaporation will help keep them cool and lead to many fun games.

The safety tip of the week is to signal your intentions well ahead of time to allow the other party to react in that head on aspect. A general rule of thumb is both parties should veer to the right. Nobody wins in an accident!
