Wild Steelhead Retention On Eight Olympic Peninsula Rivers Opens February 16

This season the date for wild steelhead retention was changed from December 1 until February 16 on the eight streams where wild steelhead are still allowed. These streams encompass the following:
Bogachiel
Calawah
Clearwater
Dickey
Hoh
Quillayute
Quinault
Sol Duc
You will still be able to retain only one wild steelhead per license year.

This move by the WDFW is a positive move to protect the diversity of steelhead populations on the Olympic Peninsula. This is at least a move to protect our last viable wild steelhead runs in the state. Though many fishermen feel that they should be entitled to wild fish harvest, the fact is that the numbers are continuing to decline and a state wide move toward total non retention of wild steelhead should be put in place! We don't want to hear in the near future "We did too little too late" as has been the case for many species!
