Yakatat, Alaska - Kings & Sockeye

If you are heading up north to the Yakatat area the reports have been outstanding for sockeye in the Situk River. Not only have the fish arrived early, they have arrived in better than normal numbers. Most anglers are flossing or lining these unwilling biters with a long 6 - 9 foot leader and a single 1/0 - 3 / 0 hook topped with a small bead or bead and yarn combination. Cast slightly upstream and sweep the rod downstream at the same rate as the gear is drifting. When you feel the presence of a fish then set the hook with a downstream motion of the rod. If the fish is not hooked in the corner of the mouth make sure to release it. If not hooked in the mouth it is considered a snagged fish by Alaska Department of Fish and Wildlife and gets quite costly if you are caught.

The king fishing in the bay has by all accounts been quite good with the largest kings into the forty pound range.

As usual there is lots of "Great" halibut action in the Yakatat area, perhaps some of the best in all of South East Alaska.
